How to be a woman in power?
By Tina Kumar
How to be a woman in power means to be the comfortable in your own skin but to have the ability to recognise that improving yourself and your abilities is incredibly important. Focus on yourself and you are on your way to to becoming a woman in power…
1. Confidence
Nothing says attractive or strong like confidence and sometimes the way to get it is to know what you want. Then, go for it. You can also get confidence by believing in yourself and your abilities. Dressing up or changing it up a bit, wearing clothes that make you happy add to your confidence. Taking photos is always fun and dressing up and going out always makes your mood feel lighter and happier so maybe try doing more of this. With a global pandemic this can be harder than usual but maybe get ready and put on a bit of make up just to go for a walk or for that trip to Tesco. Yes, no one might see you in it but sometimes you should just do things for yourself. Do things that you know will help add to your confidence in a way which has a lasting affect. Like I said this goes back to self belief, believe that you are beautiful no matter what and believe that everybody has insecurities. Sometimes, you just have to work on them to make sure you are feeling your very best. Self improvement and finding ways to better yourself never hurt and not caring about what other people think is how you should adapt to be. Be confident, be who you are and, hell, why not - be brave!
2. Do what you want
Taking control of your life is one of the most powerful things you can do but this isn’t always so easy. Being young has its perks though, you don’t have any, or much responsibility but then again paying rent and bills start coming up at some point. However, in reality you still probably don’t have very really responsibility just yet. So you have the liberty to do what you want. You don’t have to be doing things you don’t want to but you also have the sheer ability to be brave, be bold and be different to others. You are young and possibly inexperienced so why not take a chance on yourself? Be young, wild and free and get up and do what you want.
3. Knowing that sometimes being more natural is better than being more glamful
Yes, as girls we like to get dolled up, put a lot of make up, change up the way we do our hair, or want to get dressed up. However, sometimes Instagram, social media, models and magazines really do affect how we see ourselves and what we might want to look like. I’m not saying you shouldn’t wear make up or want to do your hair but sometimes you could do all those things whilst aiming to look a little more natural. True beauty is being confident in your skin and knowing that you should be who you are. Your vision of what's beautiful shouldn't be distorted because of social media or media influences.
4. If it’s not making you happy, cut it loose
Life isn’t as much about what you did than what you didn’t do. If someone or something isn’t making you happy then it’s not worth just going along with it. So if it’s a job or a friend or some negative inner energy you need to do something about it. Either make it better or cut it loose. Young people go through a lot as it is and finding your way in life and finding your centre can take time. But time well spent is time spent on improving yourself and finding ways to improve and make your life and the life of others around you better. You are a powerful woman when you have the ability to take care of yourself and the others around you. It should be that, you, yourself have that want to help not just yourself but to also want to help the people around you. The ones you do know and they ones you don’t…
5. Dress up more often than not
Dressing up makes you happy and sometimes we forget to realise how much we enjoy dressing up. A global pandemic might have moved us inside our homes where we may be adhering to a more comfortable attire. Like wearing tracksuits, lounge wear or jeans/t-shirt or whatever it is your are more comfortable in and this in fact reminds us how much we to like dress up. I don’t think I can explain this one much because it’s pretty self explanatory but changing it up sometimes can make it more fun and interesting. Sometimes when you make an effort in the way you look. You reflect positive energy on yourself and the others around you.
6. Celebrate everything
- or at least find ways to celebrate even the smallest accomplishments
My motto in life is really ‘celebrate everything’. You see the thing about celebrating is that when you celebrate something; you get to share that moment with the people you love and the people who are close to you. Celebrating is about making memories and getting to do something enjoyable with family and friends. The thing about celebrating an accomplishment is that it is different from any other outing - because it’s more memorable. Sometimes, in life it really is about sharing special and important moments with the people you love. Celebrating with the people you love also reminds you of how much you love them. A reminder of how much everyone, there in that moment, cares for you. It reminds you how proud of each other you really are which is of course not something that might be said all that easily! Celebrating is that excuse to make it known - it might not be said very often but it's surely felt in that moment.
7. Less Instagram, more Funstagram
Social media and the likes of Instagram have become intertwined with our daily lives. At least for many of us and social media is a great tool but if you want to be a woman in power what you could do is to do more things that are fun! Instagram can be very influential in good or bad ways but listening to music, dancing, smiling and doing things that are more fun and less for the sake of social media can really give back the power to you. Then, when you are doing more things that are fun, for you; then you can go ahead and document them all you want. The underlying point here is that social media influences us in many ways but sometimes doing things for the sake of it just being fun might just help you to realise what’s missing in your life. Less Instagram, more Funstagram!
8. Eat healthy and exercise
Health is hugely important because health is wealth. Eating in a healthy way and exercising and taking care of your body is something to be proud of and it’s not always easy to control yourself or your willpower but when you find that you do - it makes you feel better. Exercise helps to release endorphins that make you feel happy. Not only that but when you are healthy, fit and achieve success in relation to your health goals you have to recognise that it was all your hard work, sacrifice, discipline and willpower that got you here. You must remember that maintaining weight and eating well are in fact a form of accomplishment.
I’m sure there are more ways of becoming a powerful woman but these are just a few that I wanted to share with you. When you come up with them, write them down, act on them and remember to always have fun…
Emma Raducanu wins US Open 2021
By Tina Kumar
Emma Raducanu makes history by becoming the first qualifier to ever win a US Open final in New York and she didn’t even drop a set in the whole tournament. After her meteoric rise to success as US Open champion the sky is the limit for the 18 year old; she beat 19 year old Leylah Fernandez to take the win and become a household name globally overnight.
She is also the youngest person to win the tennis championship since Maria Sharapova who won in 2004 and the first British champion to win a grand slam title since Virginia Wade in 1977.
Raducanu reached the Wimbledon quarter finals but had to pull out due to an injury and the US Open was in fact her only second major grand slam. Her parents could not join her but she spoke of how their support had lead her to huge success.
The teen sensation is yet to fully experience the way winning the US grand slam is to change her life but the way things are moving she can expect to await a bright future ahead. If played right, it will entail many more wins, many more achievements and many more making-history moments.
Shortly after her win, she found herself on The Met Gala red carpet in New York, followed by sharing the tennis court with Kate Middleton and attending the James Bond premiere for 'No Time to Die' in London. Not a bad start!
With her earning power estimated at £100 million it’ll be exciting to see where Raducanu’s career will take her next…
